BJP Karnataka’s #10YearChallenge turns out to be a flop

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Karnataka, on January 17, took the #10YearChallenge, which has taken internet by storm, and tweeted a collage of images showing comparison between 2009 and 2019 and depicting development brought about by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government.

Alt News did a fact check and with the help of tools like Google reverse image search and Yandex image search, found out when the images were first used.

SET 1:

The image on the left is a screenshot from the documentary titled, “Vulnerable without a toilet”, which was first uploaded on May 23, 2014 by Video Volunteers. A still from the documentary was passed of an image from 2009 by BJP Karnataka.

The image on the right is from an article published by Mint on October 11, 2011. The image was captioned, “A woman using the toilet constructed by ‘Hyundai’ in Irungattukottai village.” The article talked about an initiative undertaken by Hyundai Motor India Limited of constructing a toilet for each of the 205 homes without sanitation facilities in Irungattukottai village.

SET 2:

Alt News found that the image on the left is a representational image and was used by a website named Green Drinks Singapore in an article published on August 7, 2012.

The image on the right has been taken from an article published by Down to Earth in 2018. Ironically, this image shows a woman, Swalia Bibi, who became the 20 millionth beneficiary of the PM Modi’s much-touted Ujjwala Yojana scheme could no longer afford an LPG cylinder.

SET 3:

On the left is again a representational image. Alt News found a blog published on January 10, 2011 which had captioned the image, “Students in the village of Tahipur in Bihar used kerosene lanterns for studying.”

The image on the right is a Getty image, taken in February, 2010. The image was captioned, “Electricity in village of Bazida Zattan Village, photographed on February 24, 2010 in Karnal, India.”

What belongs to the Congress tenure has been portrayed by the BJP as the work done under its regime.
