Jawaharlal Nehru, not Modi, was the first PM to visit Kumbh

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell head Amit Malviya took to Twitter and wrote that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the “first head of state to visit Kumbh in all these years.”

“Refreshing to see Prime Minister wear his faith on his sleeve. He is the first head of the state to visit Kumbh in all these years. #ModiInKumb #ModiKumbhVisit,” Malviya tweeted.

Well, Alt News ripped apart his tweet and corrected him on two aspects.

First, the prime minister is not the head of the state, but it is the president. The prime minister is the leader of the cabinet of ministers and the head of the executive branch of the government.

In this aspect, first Indian president Rajendra Prasad was the first head of the state to visit Kumbh in 1953.

President Ram Nath Kovind himself informed about the same.

Second, PM Modi is not the first PM to visit Kumbh. The first Prime Minister to visit Kumbh was India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who visited the mela in 1954.

“In the lead-up to the Mela, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru became personally involved in the arrangements and visited the site, even though it was technically the jurisdiction of the UP government. On another visit to the Mela on Paush Purnima, in the presence of media photographers, he paused to dip his hand in the sacred waters of the sangam…,” author Kama Maclean wrote in her book ‘Pilgrimage and Power: The Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, 1765-1954.’

Former prime minister Indira Gandhi also visited Kumbh in 1977. Alt News attached a tweet of senior journalist Tavleen Singh wherein she has claimed that she was physically present when Gandhi took a dip in the Ganges.

Clearly, not only did Amit Malviya not know who the head of the state actually is but his claim that PM Modi is the first PM to visit Kumbh is also false.
